Shree Krishna Janmashtmi

It was Krishna Janmashtmi on 22nd August. For my international blogger friends, Janmashtami, is a Hindu Festival in India celebrating the birth of Lord Krishna, an avatar of the god Vishnu.

People in India celebrate it in the same way as Christmas is celebrated world wide. People do Rasa Lila, dramatic enactments of the life of Krishna. An important feature of Janmashtami is Jhaanki (tableau) depicts various stages of Lord Krishna's childhood. Jhaanki means peeping in the past life, in relation with Janmashtami it means peeping into the life of Lord Krishna.

I had never put up Jhaanki. This year our parents are here in California and mummy got small Laddu Gopal with his swing to put Jhaanki. Laddu Gopal swing and along with some of my decorative stuffs and plants, have a look to my first time Jhaanki!

I was in class 7th when our school participated in National Children Science Congress 1999. With my team members/friends/class mates, we were the winners at district level, state level and went for final level competition in Mapusa, Goa. Our project was on Vermi-compost, an extremely organic way to turn daily household waste to powerful fertilizer for your own garden. 

Why I m telling you about my school days??...Well, recently I came across this wonderful website Daily Dump which reminded me of these school days. Postage Stamps!

In the world of Emails, SMS, BBMs, Facebook, Twitter...we have forgotten our postal services. Well we do need it for a few official works, but that's when we 'NEED' it, else almost everything can be done on Internet. And with this amazing Postal Service, we forgot those beautiful postage stamps. Started with my maternal-aunts in their childhood, I continued to update that red stamp collection book. This reminded me while using US Postal Service. Around the world, different countries have different designs and layouts of postage stamps. Just thought of looking at some of the Indian Postage Stamps. There is a huge list of Indian postage stamps, see here. While searching for this post. Textile Heritage, India

Being a Textile Designer, I have to share this with all. In India textile enjoys a rich heritage and the origin of textiles in India traces back to the Indus valley Civilization where people used homespun cotton for weaving their clothes. Ramayana and Mahabharata, the Indian epics depict the existence of wide variety of fabrics in ancient India. These epics refer both to rich and stylized garment worn by the aristocrats and ordinary simple clothes worn by the common people. The contemporary Indian textile not only reflects the splendid past but also cater to the requirements of the modern times. 

Each and every region of India contributes in creating textile tradition.  The hilly region of the country produces a rich variety of woolen textiles. The barren and semi barren regions like Rajasthan and Gujarat usually prefers embroidered bright colored textiles. The coastal areas of the south eastern regions prefer light colored fabrics and particularly cotton and silk textiles are very popular over there. Apart from those mentioned, each and every region and state of India has its own distinct individual style in textile. Lets have a look on maps below.
